Il PerfectWave Transport appartiene, anzi crea, una particolare categoria di meccanica CD e DVD, è infatti progettato per leggere la quasi totalità dei dischi ottici esistenti, immagazzinarne il flusso su una memoria a stato solido interna e infine veicolarlo verso un convertitore digitale/analogico esterno.L’unità consiste in un lettore ROM (Read Only Memory) ottico mediante il quale i dati audio vengono estratti in condizioni bit-perfect senza l’ausilio di Error Correction ma attraverso il sistema PS Audio MREC (Multiple Read Error Correction) che legge e rilegge il disco fino ad ottenere un segnale bit-perfect senza alcuna interpolazione; i dati ricavati sono quindi memorizzati in una versione speciale del PS Audio Digital Lens – composto da tre stadi: un input data organizer, una memoria da 64 Mb, un output data organizer – in formato digitale puro senza nessun riferimento di clock e timing. Il Digital Lens contiene un buffer di memoria rapido e capiente in grado di adattarsi alle variazioni di velocità e alle ripetute fasi di lettura del disco ottico. Il flusso viene infine trattato dall’Asynchronous Fixed Timing Clock e inviato esternamente al convertitore con timing perfetto e bassissimo jitter attraverso le uscite digitali e completamente jitter-free attraverso i connettori HDMI (I2S). Le porte HDMI nel sistema PerfectWave non sono progettate per veicolare dati HDMI ma per trasportare il flusso I2S in uno formato proprietario PS Audio. L’I2S è lo standard di gestione dati nativo per tutte le connessioni audio digitali ed è costituito da tre clock separati e da un canale dati audio. La soluzione universale quando si vuole veicolare il flusso audio da una meccanica a un convertitore consiste nel mixare insieme i 3 clock e i dati audio per ottenere un unico canale più semplice da trasportare mediante connessione ottica Toslink, coassiale RCA o bilanciata AES/EBU. Il formato usato da queste connessione è l’S/PDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) e lo si trova in tutti i sistemi meccanica/convertitore, dai più economici a quelli High-End. Una volta che il segnale S/PDIF è giunto a destinazione occorre separare di nuovo i canali clock dai dati audio; il processo di encoding e decoding descritto compromette la purezza del flusso audio digitale e tale deterioramento è facilmente percepibile soprattutto in catene di riproduzione di qualità elevata. Il sistema di trasporto I2S via HDMI proprietario PS Audio risolve all’origine il problema e il risultato è alla portata delle orecchie di chiunque. Il pannello frontale è caratterizzato dalla presenza di due entità, il pulsante di accensione e il pannello LCD a colori interamente Touch Screen che visualizza copertine, elenco tracce e informazioni in modalità avanzata. Con un presupposto progettuale assimilabile alla serie di rigeneratori di corrente PS Audio Power Plant – risolvere cioè all’origine il problema derivante dalla scarsa qualità della corrente elettrica di casa eliminando, di fatto, qualunque connessione tra ingresso e uscita – nel PerfectWave Transport non c’è relazione tra ingresso e uscita del segnale. Il flusso audio non è infatti direttamente riprodotto dal disco ottico, viene estratto e inviato nel Digital Lens, rigenerato e immagazzinato in memoria per un periodo fino a 3 minuti e infine veicolato all’esterno con clock asincrono e non correlato. È in grado di leggere dischi ottici di qualunque genere (ad eccezione dei Super Audio CD per via delle restrizioni sul formato imposte da Sony) e, unico al mondo, può riprodurre file in formato WAV non compresso, anche ad alta risoluzione 192 kHz – 24 bit, masterizzati su supporto DVD. I codec attualmente implementati sono solo la base di partenza, il Transport è infatti continuamente aggiornabile mediante la scheda di memoria SD oppure online attraverso la porta di rete Ethernet, entrambe le connessioni sono situate sul retro. A considerare le caratteristiche e le funzioni del PerfectWave Transport potrebbe venire da pensare che non sia altro che un semplice computer in un involucro dal design adeguato.
